Old Orchard Beach is considering placing restrictions on where sex offenders can live in the seaside, southern Maine community. While such restrictions could make residents and visitors feel safer, registries and limits on where offenders can live and work haven’t been shown to make much difference in their two-decade history. Instead, a heightened focus on treatment and rehabilitation would likely be more effective at reducing the horrific crime of sex abuse. Full Article

Nice article. This is almost a piece of real journalism, as opposed to the standard fare of political hype, myth and outright fear-mongering. The author, for the most part, is actually speaking in factual truths.
I do have a slight problem with the authors statement
“sex crimes are under reported and many victims and their families do not pursue prosecution.”
I’m still failing to understand or see how the author or anyone else for that matter could possibly know this; let alone make this statement if these incidents are not being reported. Perhaps if someone making this statement would actually produce some victims, these unreported incidents would sound more credible.
